John Porcellino's Spit and a Half has been around since 1992 (returning in 2010 after a break because of his ill health), the only older alternative comics distributor still operating is Marc Arsenault's wowcool.com founded in 1988 with Sam Henderson and Tom Hart. By comparison, Austin English's Domino Books disribution site was (citation here) established in 2011. If you are interested in alternative, underground, art, self-published, or basically comics based on self-expression rather than as an IP farm system, then Spit and a Half is a good place to start.
