New Comic Book Day 12/7

My recommendations from the weekly New Comics listings in Previews World:

The first volume of a complete reprinting of Christopher Priest's iconic run on Black Panther.
Abraham Riesman interviews Christopher Priest in 2018, giving some historical perspective to the above comics.
Christopher Priest is interviewed by comicsbeat.com on his newest series DRACULINA: BLOOD SIMPLE, due out this month!

Well, this certainly isn't what I was expecting upon first glance at this cover. It seems to be a Mature Readers semi-autobiographical look back at his time at a Jewish summer camp. I'm really wanting to read this one...

Always good to see more translated material available, looks like besides your LCS the publisher sells their books on Ebay.

Robert Williams' new book of essays and new edition of his collected works from Last Gasp Books and Comix. Straight to your LCS.

For all your cult film and monster movie needs, check out that cool website also.

New Comic Book Day 12/6

My few recommendations from comics coming 12/6 from Lunar Distribution:

More information from Penguin Random House

DC POSTER PORTFOLIO: GEORGE PEREZ TP published by DC Comics

I can't think of a better tribute to the artist. In the 80s it seemed like George Perez drew a cover for every DC series! You don't need me to tell you they were all great.

13th Dimension gives us a peek at the back cover which shows every cover reproduced within!

MAD MAGAZINE #29 published by DC Comics

MAD is all reprints these days, but at least the editors do a good job of cherry-picking quality work from all eras of the magazine.

Five Highlights from THE NEW NOSTALGIA JOURNAL 29

Image from TCJ Archive

THE NEW NOSTALGIA JOURNAL (October 1976)

John Benson fanzine from 1975 (an example of what Groth is speaking to below)

(Image from EC Comics Wiki)

THE EDITOR'S BALLOON: Gary Groth talks about what he looks for in writing on comics in fanzines: "The second faction is primarily concerned with comics as art, and write with that in mind. Their work is scarcer, probably due to the fact that there are so few comics works that can stand up to the demands of art, and for the most part they don't write about less accomplished comics creators. They write with posterity in mind, are interested in a story's feeling, it's implications and texture as opposed to how it is being received in the marketplace, or whether or not it is trendy. They are particularly interested in the artist's technique, the relationship between writer and artist, storytelling structures, and theories. Their work is absorbing to say the least. Among this group are Fred Patten, John Benson, Richard Kyle, and James Denney (who writes too rarely on comics)." (pages 2 and 6)

Alan Freedman pictured after his tenure as assistant editor on The Journal

(Image from GCD)

Lost in the mists of time: "TNJ now has an assistant editor: Alan Freedman, a comics and science fiction fan, joins the TNJ staff with this issue. Alan is working with us on the day to day hustle and bustle of putting out TNJ (and SOUNDS FINE). Alan has already proven himself to be of great help, and we're very happy to welcome him aboard." Ebay Finds: everlovin

everlovin Ebay store (aka Joel Thingvall, I believe) has been selling off an amazing collection. Here's some recent items up for sale or auction...

According to this TCJ article the editors of this 1982 alternative publication were John Holmstrom, JD King, and Bruce Carleton. Seems like Peter Bagge and "Studs Kirby" were in every issue also. I've never seen this for sale, let alone a complete run:

An underground comics zine from the late 80s, Trina, Krystine Kryttre, Dori Seda, Rebecka Wright, Angela Bocage, Georganne Deen, Victor Moscoso are among the contributors:

And, for something completely different some beautiful unpublished (?) work by Dan Spiegle:

There's just about every kind of fanzine represented, here's a classic one (coincidentally focusing on Dan Spiegle):

Beyond the LCS: Phil Elliott New Kickstarter Today

I've been following Phil Elliott publications on Kickstarter for two years now, every once in a while with friends and collaborators like Mike Powell or Robert Wells.
His newest, GAG, Is with two folks well known to all discerning comics fans: Eddie Campbell and Glenn Dakin.
The original version of GAG was offered as a reward that was gone before I got on board. The cover is reproduced on the campaign page:
GAG was also a seven issue series from UK publisher Harrier. Cover images from GCD:

The new GAG is sixty pages of all new strips, and the sketch tier for Phil Elliott still has some slots open!
UPDATE 12/5: All the sketch tiers are sold out, and the project is nearly 200 percent funded!
According to John Freeman the Phil Elliott and Glenn Dakin strips are previously published.
