Five Highlights From The Comics Journal #44

THE COMICS JOURNAL #44 (January 1979)
Distributors: Bud Plant, Sea Gate, Well News Service.

1. NEWSWATCH: PLOOG & KIRBY QUIT MARVEL OVER CONTRACT DISPUTE

More fallout from Marvel's "work made for hire contract". Frank Brunner, Don McGregor, and Roger Slifer are reported to have previously quit working for Marvel because of the contract.

2. REVIEW: SIDEKICKS AND SUN GODS by Catherine Yronwode
In case you don't know who Cat Yronwode was, this section shows her genius.

3. REVIEW II: SABRE'S A DULL BLADE by Gary Groth

It's a bit unsettling when Gary Groth is nice about mediocre comics, but he still makes a point in the first paragraph that earned him many enemies over the years:
"Given total freedom to do what they want, comics creators, it appears, will do exactly what they are already doing for commercial comics."

The best of the Best and Worst lists.

Also worth mentioning that Bethke was voted Best AND Worst writer for The Comics Journal!
