New Alternative and Small Press Comix Arrivals (March Week 1)

A periodic reminder these recommendations are in no particular order. I don't buy all these comix, although most sites give sample pages to see what you are getting. While I myself don't have a weekly pull list, we don't discriminate against corporate IP farm comics (we just don't read m/any of them anymore). Hopefully, you will find something otbp you like in our weekly listings...

1. BECA RATON by Anna Haifisch (Apa Apa Comics)

Spanish-language version of this relatively recent Haifisch release. READY IN AMERICA, profiled last week, is up for pre-order from Fantagraphics.

2. STRIP AIDS 1987 (Wow Cool)

I've never even seen a copy of the 1987 UK Strip Aids benefit comic! A real trip back in time to a special comics scene coming together for a special cause. A companion book to this would be Alan Moore's A.A.R.G.H. benefit anthology that came out the following year with many of the same creators.

3. FEAST RAKUSHI  by Rokka Mashiro and Blue Film (Taco Shop)

My translation abilities are very limited, but I think this is made by two creators who are exotic dancers who make manga and essays about their love of food.

4. GATES OF PLASMA by Carlos Gonzalez (Lucky's Books and Comics) Vancouver, BC

I randomly picked this from among the many small press offerings of this venerable Canadian bookstore. Turns out it's by outsider artist Gonzalez, who was spotlighted by Floating World Comics last year in Wasp Video Roadhouse. TCJ interview conducted by Matthew Thurber here.

5. JUST INDIE COMICS NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION (Just Indie Comics)

We love print newsletters and zines about comics, test your translation app out on this beauty.

6. Michael Shea Wright spotlight (Domino Comics)

A selection of oversize comics from the talented cartoonist.

7. SLOPPY SLOPES by Various Sick Fucks (Gosh London),

A horror anthology where all the contributors use pseudonyms, except Mike Diana. Enter at your own risk!

8. FACES by Maria Magana (Gatoshop)

Guadalajaran artist Maria Magana has two notable titles in the February 26th site update, this one has some incredible color work.

9. CRUMPLE #121 by Walker Mettling (Quimby's Books)

This thing is huge, bigger than magazine size, with a silk-screened cover and risograph interior. The artist talked to the New York Comics & Picture-story Symposium on November 1, 2022:

10. CARTOONS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS (Cartoon Movement) Download at link

From the press release:
This booklet is the result of a collaborative effort between the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Cartoon Movement, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. An illumination of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with cartoons crafted by artists from around the globe.

A list of international cartoonists commissioned to illustrate the book:

BLUESKY BONUS: Evan Dahm's 3RD VOICE webcomic (3rd Voice home page)
From what I can gather Evan Dahm has been serializing the "3rd Voice" fantasy webcomic online since December 12, 2022. According to this post the "First Passage" of the serial will conclude March 4, a remarkable achievement imho.
