Kazuo (LONE WOLF AND CUB) Koike and Ryoichi (MAI, THE PSYCHIC GIRL) Ikegami were early creators of translated Manga in the US. Dark Horse has rereleased these omnibus collections of the complete CRYING FREEMAN series, newly formatted to read right to left.
The art is very realistic, comparable almost to Neal Adams rather than what I think of as Manga art. In contrast to the realistic art is the exaggerated romance story between assassin Yo Freeman and witness Emu Hino. I love how I was expecting an unusual Japanese crime story and Koike comes up with the (original to me, but probably not so much in 1988) twist of the hunter and hunted falling in love. There is no shortage of action as evidenced by the examples below, with some exquisite storytelling by Ryoichi Ikegami and real nice use of sound effects, as well.
